Discover Lerici: The Family-Friendly Hidden Gem of the Italian Riviera

·982 words·5 mins

Update: I’ve since written a guide to help families navigate another iconic Italian destination, and if you’re looking for an alternative to the Cinque Terre, you might consider a city like Venice, as I wrote about in my guide to navigating Venice with kids, or explore Camogli: The Authentic Alternative to Cinque Terre You Need to Visit, which my colleague Marco has since updated with a wonderful guide, and can be a great option for those seeking a more relaxed and family-friendly experience.

Nestled just a few miles south of its more famous neighbors lies the enchanting town of Lerici. Known as the “Gulf of Poets,” this beautiful seaside haven offers all the pastel-colored charm of Italy without the overwhelming crowds. It is truly a place where you can breathe, relax, and let the little ones run a bit more freely. If you’re looking for another destination that embodies this same charm, my colleague Luca has a wonderful guide to a similarly beautiful hidden gem in Italy, one that is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.

Why Lerici is Perfect for Families with Kids
#

Update: I’ve since written a guide to Senigallia’s Velvet Beach: why this hidden gem in Le Marche is perfect for families with kids, and I’ve had the chance to visit other destinations that share similar qualities. One such place is the village of Rasiglia in Umbria, which I recently published a wonderful guide to, aptly titled The Village of Streams: why Rasiglia is Italy’s most enchanting hidden secret.

Lerici is an ideal destination for families, offering a range of activities and amenities that cater to all ages. As I wrote about in my guide to Skiing with Kids in Bormio: The Affordable Olympic Alternative for Families, many families are looking for vacation spots that provide a mix of relaxation, adventure, and kid-friendly fun, and Lerici fits the bill perfectly. With its beautiful beaches, charming town center, and surrounding hills, Lerici has something for everyone, making it an excellent choice for families with kids.

Since writing this, my colleague Luca explored one of the villages that stole my heart and has recently published a guide to The Village of Streams: why Rasiglia is Italy’s most enchanting hidden secret, which I think really captures the essence of what makes these places so special.

  • Stroller-Friendly Paths: The long walk along the sea is entirely paved, making it a dream for parents with prams.
  • Safe Swimming: The waters here are generally calmer and shallower than in other parts of the Riviera, providing a safer environment for a splash.
  • The Pedestrian Heart: Much of the town center is a ZTL (limited traffic zone), meaning you don’t have to worry as much about busy cars while your children enjoy a gelato in the piazza.

My Children Loved: The Castle of Dinosaurs

One of our most cherished memories is visiting the Castello di Lerici. While the medieval fortress itself is breathtaking, the real highlight for my little ones was the Paleontology Museum housed inside.

A great way to make memories as a family is to climb to the top of the castle walls together. The view of the sparkling Mediterranean is enough to take your breath away, and the kids will feel like they are kings and queens of their own rocky kingdom.

Practical Tips for Your Trip
#

  • Best Time to Visit: To enjoy the sun without the peak August heat, I highly recommend late May, June, or September. The weather is warm enough for swimming, but the town retains its quiet, local soul.
  • The “Passeggiata” Ritual: Do as the locals do! Every evening, take a slow walk along the promenade. Stop at a local gelateria—my children loved the dark chocolate and local lemon flavors—and watch the sunset.
  • Getting Around: While you can take a ferry to Portovenere or the Cinque Terre for a day trip, staying in Lerici allows you to escape back to peace and quiet at the end of the day.

Budget-Friendly Family Dining
#

Eating out in Italy with a family doesn’t have to break the bank. In Lerici, look for “Focacceria” shops. Ligurian focaccia is world-famous, and a few warm slices make for a perfect, inexpensive lunch on the beach.

For dinner, many restaurants in the main piazza are very welcoming to children. Don’t be afraid to ask for “Pasta al Burro” (pasta with butter) or “Pasta al Pesto” (the local specialty) for the picky eaters. Most Italian waiters are incredibly nurturing and will treat your children like their own.

Safety and Comfort
#

As a mother, safety is always my top priority. Lerici feels like a very safe community. However, always remember:

  1. Sun Protection: The Italian sun is stronger than it looks, especially with the sea breeze. Pack plenty of high-SPF cream and sun hats.
  2. Hydration: Look for the public water fountains (nasoni) to refill your bottles with fresh, cold water.
  3. Beach Clubs: While there are free public beaches, investing in a day at a “Bagno” (private beach club) can be very practical. They provide umbrellas, changing rooms, and snacks, which makes a day at the beach so much easier for parents.

Lerici is more than just a destination; it’s a place where time slows down. It is perfect for families with kids who want to experience the “real” Italy—the one where you make friends with the baker and spend your afternoons counting sailboats on the horizon.

I hope this little guide helps you plan a journey that fills your family’s hearts with joy. Italy is waiting for you!
