If you’re a fan of two-wheeled adrenaline and raw vistas, the Ligurian Riviera is your paradise. This region offers sharp cliffs, coastal towns that seem to cling to the rocks, and technical trails that defy gravity. Beneath your tires, the path crunches with white limestone while the intense scent of salt spray and wild fennel hangs in the air. Just you, the sea, and the rock.
Forget flat bike paths: mountain biking here means steep climbs through vineyards and technical single-tracks perched high above the Mediterranean. The sound of your brakes mixes with the incessant chirping of cicadas under the afternoon sun. But beware: the mountain doesn’t care about your followers, respect it. Every drop of sweat will be rewarded by the view of the endless blue of the Ligurian Sea.

How to Get There#

Best Time to Visit#
- Spring (April to June): Ideal for mild weather and fewer crowds.
- Fall (September to October): Perfect for warm sea temperatures and stunning fall foliage.
Hidden Booking Secrets#
- Accommodation: Opt for local agriturismos for an authentic experience. They often provide bike rentals and local meal options.
- Early Morning Rides: Start your ride at dawn to avoid the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
- Insider Tip: Pack your swimsuit! The beaches of Bonassola and Framura are among the clearest in Liguria.

Finale Ligure: The World Mecca of Mountain Biking#
If you haven’t been to Finale Ligure, you haven’t truly lived mountain biking. This small corner of the coast has become the center of the world for Enduro lovers, thanks to a network of trails that descend from the Apennine peaks all the way down to the sandy beaches.
The most iconic trail starts from the Former NATO Base, a ghostly and fascinating site at over 1,000 meters in altitude. From here, trails like the Rollercoaster—a fluid mix of natural rollers and berms—or the technical Toboga di Canari begin. The sensation of speed through beech forests that then open up to Mediterranean scrub is pure adrenaline.
Insider Tip: Many riders use local shuttle services to get back up, but if you have the legs (or an e-bike), the climb on asphalt and dirt roads will let you appreciate Liguria’s biodiversity, with the scent of maritime pines growing more intense with every meter gained.
The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri: For True Adventurers#
For those seeking absolute solitude, the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri offers 400 km of trails traversing the region along the watershed. On a mountain bike, the sections above the Riviera di Levante are demanding and fierce. You’ll ride on windswept ridges where your gaze stretches from Corsica to the Apuan Alps. The terrain is rocky and requires precise handling and steady nerves.
In the distance, you might hear the faint roar of the surf crashing against the rocks far below. Out here, you are one with the elements. Planning is your only salvation, as bars and shelters are few and far between on these high ridges.
Technical Tips: Rock, Salt, and Tires#
Liguria is magnificent but unforgiving on your equipment. Here’s what you need to know before you set out:
- Tires: The limestone rock cuts like a knife. Use tires with a reinforced casing and a soft compound for maximum grip on wet sections.
- Brakes: The descents are grueling and sustained. Make sure you have fresh pads and at least 200mm rotors to avoid overheating.
- Maintenance: Salt spray eats metal for breakfast. Always rinse your bike with fresh water (no high pressure!) after every ride and lubricate the chain well.
Local Warning: ZTL and Muretti a Secco#
- ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones): Monterosso and Vernazza have iron-clad traffic rules. Park your car in Levanto or La Spezia to avoid fines that could ruin your trip.
- Muretti a Secco: These dry stone terraces are UNESCO World Heritage sites and incredibly fragile. Don’t touch them—a crash into these walls destroys a piece of history.
Logistics and Responsible Biking#
As I mentioned in my guide to the Sentiero Italia, the Ligurian section is where the mountains truly embrace the sea.
Can you smell the burnt rubber on the hot rocks? That’s the sign you’ve truly lived the Riviera. Check your brakes, respect those on foot, and don’t look back.
Two wheels, one trail, zero distractions. See you on the coast!
